Dr. Cogburn Attends CHI 2009

Cotelco Director, Dr. Derrick Cogburn, is attending the annual Computer Human Interaction (CHI) conference held from April 4-9 in Boston, MA. The conference, hosted by ACM's Special Interest Group on Computer Human Interaction (SIGCHI), is entitled "Digital Life, New World" and will include nearly 2000 attendees from 38 countries. iSchool Professors Mueller and Cogburn elected to GigaNet leadership roles

Drs. Milton Mueller and Derrick Cogburn (Cotelco Director) were recently elected to lead the Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GigaNet). Mueller was elected to a two-year term as chair of GigaNet, while Cogburn was re-elected to the GigaNet board as chair of the Communication Committee.

 Cotelco Director Dr. Derrick Cogburn was recently elected president of the International Communication Section of the International Studies Association (ICOMM ISA), where he will be responsible for recruitment, budget, and other planning decisions.

Benjamin Addom's poster, ICTs for Synergy: A Case Study of Scientific Knowledge and Local Farmers' Innovative Activities in Ghana, won one of the best poster awards at the iConference held on Tuesday, February 10, 2009.

Benjamin Addom invited to present at the Doctoral Consortium of CITASA - Thursday, April 03, 2008

Doctoral student and COTELCO research associate Benjamin Addom has been selected to present his work at Doctoral Consortium of the Communication and Information Technologies Section of the American Sociological Association (CITASA). 
Benjamin, along with other scholars that hail from universities around the globe, will present his work  to a panel of senior researchers interested in the sociology of communications or information technologies.

Dr. Derrick Cogburn, Fatima Espinoza and David James to present research at IAMCR 2008 - Thursday, April 03, 2008

Dr. Cogburn and COTELCO research associates Fatima Espinoza and David James have been invited to present their paper entitled "Exploring the Impact of Virtual Organization Structures on Geographically Distributed Collaboration in University-Based Diversity Efforts in the STEM Disciplines", at the Participatory Communication Research Section of the IAMCR Conference.  
Scholars invited to present in the section will showcase research  that addresses issues related to communication between community members and other stakeholders that are engaged in processes of social change.

Third Annual iConference - iFutures: Systems, Selves, Society - Thursday, March 06, 2008 
Research Fellows Benjamin Addom and Miao Chen will attend the Third annual iConference, which has "iFutures:Systems, Selves and Society" as a theme. The iConference features paper sessions, a poster session, roundtables, and ample opportunities for conversations to understand and create the future role of information
in all human endeavors. Ben and Miao will gather with other scholars professionals to exchange ideas on the following topics: 
Community technologies and networking
Cultural information systems
Information policy, ethics and law

Ben Addom to Participate in this years' Summer Doctoral Program of OII - Friday, July 13, 2007
Benjamin Kwasi Addom, the Lab Manager of Cotelco and a doctoral student in the I-School at Syracuse will be participating in this years' summer doctoral program organize by Oxford Internet Institute in collaboration with Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard between July 16th and 27th.

Ben is among 30 other doctoral students across the globe who will be spending these two weeks with some selected distinguished faculty members whose research fall within the three research themes of Oxford Internet Institute.

Cotelco, the I-School at Syracuse, and Oxford Internet Institute are paying for his fees while Ben takes care of transport and other expenses. He looks forward to receiving feedbacks on his dissertation research ideas that deal with knowledge sharing between developed and developing nations, geographically distributed collaboration, and networks for building community knowledge infrastructure all within the emerging field of "Community Informatics".

Invitation to attend McNair Summer Research Colloquium

This is to invite the general public to this year's Summer Research Colloquium of the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program in which both Drs. Derrick L. Cogburn and Noemi Enchautegui-De-Jesus are faculty mentors.

This is a federally funded annual summer research program designed to prepare students for graduate education, leading to doctoral studies. McNair is one of several TRIO programs established under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965.

The time for both days - Thursday 9th and Friday 10th of August is 10:00am EST at the School of Management, Room 203. Scholars participating in the program will be presenting their emerging research for feedback.

Cotelco Lab Member and Partner Attend Global Forum on Disability and ICT - Monday, April 02, 2007

Fatima Espinosa, a research associate with Cotelco attended the first UN Global Forum on ICT and Accessibility on Monday, 26 March.  The Global Forum, entitled "The Global Initiative for Inclusive ICTs" was convened by the UN Global Alliance on ICT and Development, to which Dr. Cogburn, Cotelco Director, has been appointed as a High-Level Advisor.  Cotelco partner, Dr. Peter Blanck, Chair of the Burton Blatt Institute, also attended the Global Forum and presented some of the work of BBI.

 

Cotelco at SU Mayfest - Monday, April 23, 2007

On Tuesday, 24 April, Cotelco will participate in various aspects of "Mayfest" a Celebration of Student Creativity and Innovation on the campus of Syracuse University.  From 11:00 - 1:00 the Globalization Seminar will hold the "Final Forum" where student teams from South Africa and Syracuse will use advanced webconferencing and collaboration tools to present their final presentations. From 2:00 – 3:30, the undergraduate students from IST 456 Information Policy and Decision Making will also be using webconferencing technologies to present their final team projects.  From 10:00 - 2:00, Cotelco members will be hosting a poster session with refreshments in the 3rd floor lobby, with student presentations of posters representing the Center and several of our key projects. Dr. Cogburn Attends the 2nd Meeting of the UN Global Alliance on ICT and Development - Tuesday, February 27, 2007

The Global Alliance on ICT and Development opens its 2nd Annual Meeting in Silicon Valley, hosted by Dr. Craig Barrett, CEO of Intel and convened at the headquarters of Intel.  Dr. Cogburn is attending the first day of the two-day meeting and will be blogging on the Internet Governance Project blog.
 

Dr. Cogburn appointed to Education, Outreach, and Training Group for the NYSGrid - Monday, January 29, 2007

The NYSGrid’s mission is “to create an advanced collaborative technological infrastructure that supports and enhances the research and educational missions of institutions in New York State”. Dr. Derrick L. Cogburn has become a member of NYSGrid’s Education, Outreach and Training group, focusing on these initiatives as they relate to the users, to K-16, to underrepresented groups, and so on.

 

Dr. Cogburn and Dr. Zakaria to present at IWIC2007 - Tuesday, January 23, 2007

Dr. Derrick L. Cogburn and Dr. Norhayati Zakaria will be presenting “Culture vs. Distance: Understanding the Dynamics of Globally Distributed Collaboration” at The First International Workshop on Intercultural Collaboration on January 25, 2007. This three day conference will be held at Kyoto University in Japan, focusing on intercultural collaboration from both socio-cultural and technical perspectives.

Dr. Derrick L. Cogburn will be attending a two day conference entitled "Designing
Cyberinfrastructure for Collaboration and Innovation" in Washington, D.C. starting
January 29, 2007. This conference is sponsored by NSF, University of Michigan, Council
on Competitiveness, Science Commons, and the Committee for Economic Development.

Dr. Cogburn to attend NSF Third AGEP Evaluation Capacity Building Meeting - Wednesday, January 24, 2007

From 1-3 February 2007, Dr. Cogburn will join his colleagues from the Central New York- Puerto Rico (CNY-PR) Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) in attending the Third AGEP Evaluation Capacity Building Meeting in San Juan, Perto Rico.  Dr. Cogburn will also lead an online training session for the new NY AGEP Collaboratory.
